In the early eighties, some bright spark came up with the idea that if you irradiated freshly picked fruit and vegetables with some form of Ionizing radiation, the produce would “keep fresh far longer than it would with traditional storage methods”. There were quite a lot of questions raised about this suggestion, the main one being that while the produce might look fresh after this treatment it would not necessarily still be fresh.
The dispute started to gain some coverage in the media, and of course the producers and their Lobby groups fought back using their tame media to good advantage. Headlines soon started to appear that the “loony left tree hugger muesli knitting” movement had been claiming that “irradiated tomatoes would make people glow in the dark” and “cause their hair to fall out” like it does with radiation sickness.
Naturally this provoked a reaction from loony left tree huggers like myself ( I can’t knit Muesli though), not least of which was the complaint that nobody, ever, anywhere had said any such thing, at least not outside of the Sun/Mail/Express Newspaper offices. The whole “Glow in the dark” controversy was a complete fabrication courtesy of the usual suspects whose readers were only too happy to score points off loony leftists, after all it is their very reason for existence.
Naturally this conveniently turned attention away from the real arguments about irradiation of food which were largely buried by this duplicity. Irradiation became a regular thing and is still in use today and all traces of an argument have been erased from history. Many people reading this piece will be asking what is so dangerous.
Short answer is that there is nothing immediately dangerous about it, you will not glow in the dark, nor will your hair fall out, but the long term effects of this practice are still worth noting even if they are not fatal.
It is generally true that by the irradiating fresh produce it will stand much longer and look much better than produce that has not been irradiated, but this only means that the appearance of something is no longer a guarantee of its freshness. When this argument first appeared 40 odd years ago, very little research had been done on this process, so it was given the go-ahead before all the facts were known.
If you Google ‘Food Irradiation’ you will find a great deal on the subject and the highest ranking search results going to great lengths to state that Food is perfectly safe with the emphasis placed on killing harmful agents/bacteria. What you dont immediately see in these search results is that irradiating fresh food also kills the helpful, harmless and healthy bacteria too.
Another casualty is the vitamin content of fresh produce. Irradiation does not stop the natural loss of Vitamins that occurs when produce is cut or plucked from the parent plant, so that loss of vitamin content continues, particularly with vitamins A, B1, E and K.
The UK Food Commission has been working to raise awareness of these issues for many years and they state:-
- Food irradiation is not a solution for cleaning up foods which are unhygienically produced and unfit for consumption;
- Food irradiation benefits larger producers and traders rather than consumers and small-scale producers;
- Food irradiation helps to extend the distance food can travel (known as ‘food miles’) and is not conducive to the promotion of more local food supplies;
- Good food doesn’t need irradiating.
All of these latter arguments may seem trivial in 2021 when viewed separately but collectively they all stack up. My main concern is the fact that by twisting the argument to make the consumer look stupid and ill informed, the door is forced open and the “Fiddle” is entered into modern life as though its just a natural issue with zero impact on society as a whole.
The public were misled by a duplicitous media campaign, designed to promote those in the business at the expense of the consumer of making a profit in favour of an industry which has been tasked with supplying fresh wholesome food and decided to just deal with the Profits harvest and screw the customer. If they can do this with one issue and get away with it, they will continue to use that method…and they have. Lots!
They also succeeded in perpetuating the myth loony leftists are a menace to society, when all we want is transparency and truth, both of which are in very short supply as I write this.
When we go up against people who play the long game, while the rest of us are left to do the short term fire fighting, they win and we lose.
A lot of people never had a clue about this issue to begin with, or they simply forgot about it because they are too damned busy earning a living and paying the taxes that “Long Term Players” don’t bother paying.
The other thing that happens…because this story is far from finished, is that during the last 40 years, consumers by the million have been happily taking home that nice shiny ‘Daily 5’ stuff that we are all told we cannot live without. While happily feeding it to their families thinking that they really are feeding them a healthy, vitamin rich, ‘5 a day’, they have yet to realise that its not quite so simple.
Irradiated food may well look good but the much of the goodness will have left the building weeks ago. In short it’s a con. A very clever one….and its still not over yet. Having removed an important part of the nutrients in our Daily 5, another branch of the corporate machine is more than happy to replace the stuff their mates have removed, at a very profitable margin. Hence the title of this piece, your dietary “goodness”has been stolen, and now its being sold back to you…
The global dietary supplements market size is expected to showcase an exponential growth by reaching USD 117.92 billion by 2027 while exhibiting a CAGR of 9.8% between 2020 and 2027
The reason “You couldn’t make it up” Is simply because it’s really happening. It just occurred to me that if we all had enjoyed access to affordable Organic produce fresh from the farm this last 40 years, we could probably survive nicely on a “Daily 3” instead of 5.
If you take nothing else from this piece, please remember that the Media doesn’t work for you, neither does Industry or the Think Tank Lobbyists that support it. They exist for profit, nothing else.
Question everything, especially what you are being told right now, in February 2021, after a year of chaos and Lockdown
Remember, those that play the long game planned all this, it was not a happy series of events that just happened. The whole strategy was thought out from the very first shiny irradiated Aubergine flown in from Timbuktu, to the last bottle of Vitamin Tablets you bought.
